In Colonial times it was self-evident that aspiring Africa artist were required to have a solid foundation in European styles of painting. Later it became apparent that for African artists, such knowledge and influences was actually having a negative and counter productive effect. Fortunately for Samba Cheri, his only influence of western art/culture was through magazines and cartoons and the graphic art featured in contemporary newspapers. Amedeo Clemente Modigliani was born to a Jewish family in the pastoral countryside of Tuscany, Italy. In the summer of 1884, this Italian artist became the fourth child of Flaminio Modigliani and his wife, Eugenia Garsin.
It has been said that Amedeo’s birth may have actually saved the family from financial ruin.
