Odalisque by Boris Kustodiev
Three years ago in London a painting was sold at Christie’s for £1.69m. However, Russian officials have now decalered this painting a fake.
The painting, Odalisque is an oil on canvas which depcits a nude woman reclining on a bed and was presented as a work by Boris Kustodiev, a 19th-century Russian artist. But Rosokhrankultura, the Russian cultural watchdog, has listed Odalisque as a forgery.
So far,two Russian museums have also come forward and backed this claim, reporting that the painting is by an unkown artist. The owner who …

The total sale on Wednesday at Christies was well below the low estimate – but these figures that were estimated in June were a galaxy away. A lot has happened in the global markets since then. However, one positive outcome of the high end art market struggling to make even the lowest estimates at the leading auction houses is the huge expansion of contemporary art, increasing by some 250%. The world financial system is collapsing and whilst art is selling for lower prices than pre-economic doom, it is attracting more interest than ever before. It seems that investing in art is becoming a wider trend.
A collection of photos by the contemporary American photographer William Eggleston completely sold out in New York; Sotheby’s and Christie’s have also announced their second-highest totals for an autumn contemporary art sale in London; and at the Frieze and Zoo art fairs, some dealers reported bullish sales (see Market News).
