In Colonial times it was self-evident that aspiring Africa artist were required to have a solid foundation in European styles of painting. Later it became apparent that for African artists, such knowledge and influences was actually having a negative and counter productive effect. Fortunately for Samba Cheri, his only influence of western art/culture was through magazines and cartoons and the graphic art featured in contemporary newspapers.
